Writings from a decade ago: Not much has changed

I had dinner with my sister last night. She has been encouraging me to write along with other folks. I told her I had lots of stuff written. She then goes on to tell me, "well you already should have your book." I agree to just agree. It has been some time since I have had the inner will to pursue writing as a career. I have another blog I pulled up to remind her that there was a time when I wrote about other things that interested me that had facts and references. I guess I just personally stopped believing in the ability to change things with information that must be read.  Here is a post http://changestobelieve.blogspot.com/ I am trying to believe again. Tuesday, March 31, 2009 Mayor Cory Booker article- Listen Waco Here is an example of leadership in a mayoral fashion from our friends to the north. Waco can take some notes. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lanny-davis/the-purple-leadership-of_b_180795.html I have longed to see viable changes and recognizable investments in g...

Summer of 81

The Summer of 1981 a 15 year old boy was found after a long and exhaustive search. The young black child was from a good family on the east side of town. He was their only son. The police report said that there were no defensive wounds on the body. Which is odd because he was found locked in a refrigerator. Just being desperate to live would have had me pounding and kicking to try to get free if indeed the fridge closed on me. The officers deduced that he was looking for a warm place to rest since it was a cold night. But the boy was alerted as missing earlier in the afternoon of the day he went missing. Since the Lion's Pool story I am writing will probably included this incident, I am going to try to find out more about this story. The Waco Citizen Newspaper which is not the major paper of the town is the only paper that reported on this story. Again, this leads me to believe that there is more to this story than meets the eye. Supposedly, we local blacks have always told the tal...

The Gift of Community Service: Habitat for Humanity

It has been a very full day. This morning I volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity work site putting up trusses. The cost for these homes has increased 30k since the start of the pandemic. These homes are meant to be affordable, but since the rise in lumber and materials cost has skyrocketed, it will take some doing to actually make these home affordable for the foreseeable future. There was a time when the program could make these zero percent loans at cost homes for an average cost of 65 to 75k. The payoff would span over 18 to 22 years. This allowed for the cost of the home to be repaid at a lower rate over time. The homeowner would essential pay around 350 to 400 dollars a month for mortgage, property taxes and home owners insurance. Now with the prices of lumber at such an outrageous cost, these same homes are averaging 95 to 115k. This means the loans have to be spread out over a longer period of time to keep the homes affordable. Not only that, the need for more financial assista...

No Negative Self-Talk

Negative self-talk is something I have an ear for. I have had the opportunity to tell a many a new friend when I heard that stuff falling out of their mouths, "No negative self-talk!" I am usually persistent with it. It just hits me in my ear in a bad place. To listen to someone beat themselves up all by themselves is disturbing to me. Why do that? There are so many others in the world who will do a great job of beating you down and beating you up. Why does one of them have to be you. Sometimes if it goes on long enough, I will say something like... can you put the bat down, drop the meat cleaver, take the gloves off, take your hands from around your neck, please. Stop all that negative self-talk. It is harmful not only to you but to me. So if you have someone you know who speaks to themselves in hurtful ways and you hear and witness this, remember to remind them... no negative self-talk. Examples: I'm so stupid! Look what I did again! I'm so dumb! I'm just an idi...

Moderna Shot part 2

Thursday the administration of the 2nd covid shot was executed upon my arm. I felt fine enough to come home and mow the yard. As the day went on I was good. I slept fine, I think. Friday I was groggy and my head was filled full of air and water. I couldn't move without my brain swimming about. That lasted all Friday. Later in the mid morning of Friday I took some over the counter Naproxen and got under the covers. I just lost lots of energy. I had upper body and arm chills. I stayed under the covers all day. I only got up to go potty or turn the outside lights on. I was fatigued. Today I am much better. No light headedness has persisted. The chills have waned. I wanted to get up. I showered. I am getting dressed here soon. I feel like things are getting back on track. However, a few weeks after the first shot I lost the use my left leg a bit. I could walk, but I could not fully engage the groin muscle. I had to lift my leg into bed and out of bed. I had to struggle to drive my stic...

In Other News: The Nextdoor site

For several weeks there have been complaining neighbors (usually about noise pollution of one sort or the other) on the Nextdoor site that probably has inundated all communities across the US. I read a bit from this site from time to time. One lady posts recipes everyday. Dogs and cats are always lost and recovered or found and taken to the vet. Updates are given on the state of the road demolitions and the role of the city regarding easements and mowing. Sob stories of stolen items lifted in broad daylight from open garage doors and questions about the best dentist in town recommendations pop up. Sightings of roaming dogs and strange lurkers checking car doors are posted with video from the ring app. Houses and clothes and other items for sale litter the feed.  These posts about loud noises lasting for many minutes or the booming of cars with bass speakers rattling windows intrigue me. The speculations are wild, but usually someone will repeat the oft correct source of the loud no...

Governor and Limiter

Governors and Limiters are all around in human creations. My ceiling fan blew its self out of wack. The fan worked but the lights didn't. I tried changing the light bulbs and that yielded no repair. I swapped the ceiling fan from my back bedroom with the one not working. The exchanged ceiling fan and lights worked in the original room. The removed ceiling fan worked but the lights did not work in the back bedroom. I concluded that there was not a problem with the light switch, the fans, but with the lighting housing. I went to Lowe's and asked if they had the light housing for the fan. They neither had the housing, the fan or any intact ceiling fans of the model I had. The Lowe's employee told me to call the maker of the ceiling fan or to find the brand and purchase a new ceiling fan. Not being about that life, I turned to google. I then turned to YouTube.  I found a post on YouTube where the content creator helped me fix the problem. He showed me how to remove the limiter....

A Minute or Two

Put my butt in the seat and get to writing feeling like piano playing sometimes when I'm typing The beat and the rhythm sometimes has to be ran back but when it's actually flowin' it is tat to da tat tat And I am cool with that Promised I'd write everyday well maybe not a promise but a commitment anyway so this day I was reluctant wanted to cop out wanted an excuse perhaps the weather or the nip in the air the reasons the reason are always never much at all they never manifest reasons are never real with flesh and bone with lines or designs with feels and flows with riffs and rhymes Naked but unseen See I put those reasons in their place and now there are these words written for anyone to see if they so choose see that?!! It only took  a minute or two

And He Stooped And Then Stood Twice

Jesus was not recorded as writing anything noteworthy; however, Jesus stooped down in the sand and wrote something with his finger. Writing something with your finger in the sand is a sure sign that it is not written in stone. What a powerful sign of grace. What is not written in stone for the woman who was caught in the middle of committing adultery, was indeed written by the Son of God in the sand. How great is the One who does not hold our sins against us. Who, after writing "something" in the sand, stood erect  and said unto "them," -- Let him who has not sinned cast the first stone. Then He stoop and stood a second time and no one was there to blame her. Yes there is law Yes Christ fulfilled the law Yes Christ died to save Yes We are saved because of God's Grace and not our works! Amen
